We need to get laws written outlining the following:
- A 08 BAC to be set as the maximum allowed for pedestrians. Anything above is to be deemed ”irresponsible drinking” for a pedestrian.
- Pedestrian travel is defined at the point where the member of the public sets foot on the pavement, nature strip or road edge. It includes the road itself, intersections, railway platforms and crossings, and all forms of public transport.
- A person within the confines of a park, vacant block, home or other private or public building is not to be considered a pedestrian.
- All Pedestrians will be liable to submit to breathalyser and other drug testing in accordance to a similar regime to that expected of motorists, however, with a higher ”acceptable” BAC allowed.
- Those Pedestrians found over the limit will be fined in accordance to similar levels to those of motorists.
- Intoxicated Pedestrians should not be allowed to continue their journey via any means until their BAC has been reviewed and found to be under the legal limit, or Officers are satisfied that someone responsible is able to ensure their safety. ie They shall be restrained until they no longer present a danger to themselves and others.
Provision for a Publicity Campaign outlining the program should be devised and run so that fair warning is given of the possible consequences of flouting the new laws, drinking irresponsibly.
Drinkers need to have an accurate idea of how many drinks can safely be consumed under a zero point eight limit.

Should I be trusting someone who can’t tell the difference between .8 and .08 to be in charge of demanding new laws?
I absolutely agree with you John.
Because of weight-gender variations, it is best to use a BAC Calculator and work it out for yourself, what type and number of drinks over what time frame would put you over 08.
On your second issue, anyone can run with the concept of Pedestrian 08, so if you dont trust this site, no worries, run with it yourself.
At the end of the day, it is one policy line that should be included along with a raft of others, by anyone working this area, who actually wants to clean up the problems of alcohol related violence, binge drinking and pedestrian deaths and injuries.
Most people I’ve met today, during a pamphlet handout, cannot coherantly explain what ‘responsible drinking’ is despite the untold millions spent on that phrase by Big Liquor and agencies friendly to them.
With the Pedestrian 08 Campaign you get a reasoned definition that can be communicated and understood immediately.
